PMS (Premenstural Syndrome)
PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is characterized by repeated emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms during the luteal phase and is alleviated by the onset of menstruation.
50%-80% of all women experience PMS, and 30%-40% of them experience severe symptoms that affect physical and mental health which require treatment.
The etiology of PMS is unknown, and the pathogenesis is not well understood. Some common treatments may include hormone therapy, pain medications, anti-anxiety medications, and anti-depressants. However, many of these options can have side effects.
Hence, acupuncture is the most commonly recommended alternative treatment for severe PMS when other methods have failed.
In one study, acupuncture was shown to improve PMS symptoms by 77.8% versus 5.9% in the placebo group.
